Good times with a conscience

Covent Garden Deli was created when Ali and Matt became publicans without a pub during lockdown 2020. They have worked together for 10 years across the UK events industry and were running their busy central London pub when the pandemic shut them down. They knew they would have to radically rethink their business model and set themselves a challenge to define what a city centre pub would be like in 2030.

What came out was a thirty page document looking at ways the UK food and drinks industry can evolve to tackle the challenges we all face in regards to sustainability, community and well being.

Rethinking their central London venue Matt and Ali have converted spaces previously used for high density parties into a media suit for live-stream virtual tastings, as well as recording recipes and interviews with producers.

At Covent Garden Deli, we want to find ways to ensure our produce is as ethical and sustainable as possible; we pay attention to ingredients, packaging and try to cut down on food miles where we can. We switch up globally shipped ingredients for homegrown versions and re-imagine recipes with a reduced footprint. This logic has inspired our London Box.

Covent Garden Deli is an evolving project and with each new seasonal box we learn more.

Covent Garden Deli is currently in consultation with local councils and stakeholders about how to develop underused green spaces within London and form part of a dynamic food and drink ecosystem with green values at its core. You can find out more about these projects in our video magazine.
